SmartDose is a pill management system designed to help users organize and manage their prescriptions. Equipped with a smart pill dispenser, the system allows users to easily schedule and manage complex medication routines through the SmartDose app.
Even though medications are effective in combating disease and illnesses, patients are not always able to reap the full benefits because approximately fifty-percent of patients who are given medications do not take them as prescribed.
Users can help avoid this with Smartdose, a platform designed to make managing and organizing medications easier and more convenient.
The target audience for this platform is patients in the United States who take more than three medications each day.

Jess is a 22-year-old college student living in California. She is a low-risk patient but struggles with ADHD, which can make remembering to take her medications a challenge. She manages four different types of psychiatric medications in addition to medication for migraines and birth control. Jess uses Smartdose’s refill notifications and smartwatch reminders to help her stay on track with her medications.

Xavier is 63 years old and manages a variety of medications due to his diabetes and high blood pressure. Despite this, Xavier is considered a medium-risk patient because he exercises regularly and maintains a strict diet. He uses the SmartDose app to keep track of medications he has taken previously and to communicate with his healthcare providers, helping him stay informed about his current medications.

Zoe is a 12-year-old who was born with kidney disease, making her a high-risk patient. Without proper treatment and medication management, her condition can be life-threatening. Zoe and her mother use the caregiver feature within the SmartDose platform to stay on the same page about her medications and maintain communication with Zoe’s doctors.
In this first user flow, the user walks through the process of adding a new medication to their medication schedule within the platform. It showcases the daily, weekly, and monthly views available to help users manage their schedules. Once the user finished adding their medication, they received a notification that one of their other prescriptions was running low and can be conveniently reordered directly through the Smartdose application.

In the next flow, the user is shown how to enable the caregiver feature within the application. When this feature is activated, both the user and their caregiver can access the same medication information and doctor messages from their separate accounts. For someone like Zoe, this means that when her doctor sends her a message, her mother can see it as well.
The flow also demonstrates what an alert looks like when a user is not taking their medication as scheduled, based on the information tracked by the SmartDose app.

Finally, this user flow showcases the messaging experience between users and their doctors within the SmartDose application.
The final step of this project was presenting it. During the presentation, I explained the challenges many patients face when managing multiple medications and the importance of having a simple, reliable system to help them stay on track. I also walked through the Smartdose application and demonstrated how each of the personas could use the platform to meet their individual medication management needs. The presentation allowed me to bring the project together and demonstrate how Smartdose could provide a more organized and accessible solution for patients managing complex medication routines.

Overall, this project was a great opportunity to explore the challenges of medication management and develop a solution focused on improving the user experience for patients and their caregivers. It allowed me to apply the skills I’ve developed throughout my education and career, including user experience design, product design, user testing, wireframing, prototyping, and presentation design. Through research, persona development, user flows, and iterative design, I was able to create a platform that addresses the needs of users managing complex medication routines. The final result was a thoughtful product designed to make medication management more organized, accessible, and reliable.
